The Conference Organizing Committee is now accepting nominations for three awards:
Submission requirements
- A completed nomination form including a brief statement of nomination.
- Letters of support from both the nominator and seconder describing how the nominee meets the above criteria.
- A current curriculum vitae (for an individual) or a brief description/history (for a group).
CIC 2024 Organizing Committee members and individuals currently employed by the vaccine industry are ineligible for nomination.

Dr. John Waters Memorial Award
The Dr. John Waters Memorial Award was established in recognition of his outstanding leadership in support of immunization programs and policy. The purpose of the John Waters Memorial Award is to recognize an individual who has made outstanding contributions to vaccine research, public health and immunization programs, policies and/or advocacy.

Nomination criteria
Nominees should be Canadian residents who have made a sustained, outstanding contribution to immunization in Canada in areas such as programming, policies and/or advocacy, or to vaccine research that has impacted immunization in Canada. Nominees can be persons active in the field of immunization or recently retired.
The CIC Executive Committee will evaluate nominees based on:
- The significance of the nominee’s contributions to Canadian immunization;
- The nominee’s national and/or international influence on immunization matters; and
- The nominee’s sustained contribution to Canadian immunization over a period of time.
Award of Excellence in Immunization
The World Health Organization estimates that 2-3 million lives are saved every year by vaccines – or one life saved every 10 seconds. This incredible achievement is accomplished through the efforts of thousands of dedicated individuals – the “invisible heroes of immunization”.
The Award of Excellence in Immunization recognizes the efforts of an individual or group/organization who/that has made an outstanding contribution at the community level to front-line immunization programs, policy or advocacy.
Nomination criteria
Nominees should be Canadian residents who have made a significant contribution at the community level to front-line immunization programming, policies and/or advocacy in Canada. Nominees can be currently active or recently retired. Nominees do not necessarily have to be employed in health or public health, but need to have contributed to the success of vaccination in their communities.
The Executive Committee will evaluate each nominee’s contribution through the:
- delivery of innovative and/or highly effective vaccination programs;
- development of community-based vaccination policies or initiatives; and/or
- promotion/championing of vaccination-related efforts.
Mid-career Award
The Mid-career Award recognizes the efforts of a mid-career individual who has made a significant vaccination-related contribution in public health research, policies, programs, or advocacy. The recipient will be acknowledged at the time of the Canadian Immunization Conference.
Nomination criteria
Nominees should be Canadian residents with 5-15 years of related work experience who have made a significant contribution to vaccination-related public health research, policies, programs, or advocacy in Canada. Nominees do not necessarily have to be employed in health or public health, but their success must be related to some aspect of vaccination.
In making its selection, the Executive Committee will consider the following criteria:
- An individual whose work has been sustained and meritorious and has enhanced their field of work;
- An individual who has a record of effective collaboration;
- An individual who is emerging as a leader in their area of work; and/or
- An individual who has demonstrated a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion and/or health equity in their work.
