Submission Guidelines: Webinar Series on Cannabis
A Public Health Approach to Cannabis

We will be hosting a series of webinars throughout 2018 focused on a range of issues related to cannabis consumption.
As part of this webinar series, we are inviting public health researchers and practitioners to submit webinar proposals. The goal of these webinars is to ensure that public health, public safety, health and social service providers in Canada are prepared to respond to the needs of people who use cannabis and other substances. It is imperative that Canadians are able to access unbiased and non-judgemental health information and support from their service providers.
If your work could help others in the public health, public safety and health and social services community understand the range of issues related to cannabis consumption and other substance use, we invite you to submit a webinar proposal. Who better to learn from than experts?
We will provide the webinar platform (i.e., Adobe Connect) and will assist you with logistical support on the day of your webinar. All presenters will be responsible for preparing and presenting the webinar content. Note presenters will not be compensated for any costs associated with webinar preparation or presentation.
If accepted, you will be required to share your presentation slides no later than two weeks before the scheduled webinar. In addition, we will record the webinar which will be made available freely on our website. Any information and/or graphics contained in your presentation slides should be copyright free and referenced as appropriate.
We acknowledge that the intellectual property for these presentations belongs to the presenter(s) and will not make any claims to them as our own.
Conflict of interest
To ensure balance, independence, and objectivity, you must disclose any conflict(s) of interest that may have a direct bearing on the subject matter of your presentation. This includes relationships with any company whose products or services are related to the subject matter of your presentation. This policy is not intended to prevent a presentation and the information you disclose will not influence the review of your proposal.
What types of webinar proposals will be accepted?
We are looking for webinar proposals that will contribute to an increased understanding of issues related to cannabis consumption and to ensure that public health, public safety, health and social service providers in Canada are prepared to respond to the needs of people who use cannabis and other substances. This may include, for example, a presentation of research findings of the factors that contribute to consumption, research on specific topics (e.g. driving, co-use, benefits, harms, etc.), strategies to reduce stigma associated with consumption, discussion of promising practices or forthcoming guidelines, or discussion of successful interventions implemented. Preference will be given to webinar proposals which highlight findings or promising practices that are evidence-based.
Who can apply?
We will accept applications from a broad range of professionals in the public health community, including researchers, policy-makers, front-line care providers, health educators, health promoters, public safety, etc. Although applicants from outside of Canada are invited to submit proposals, preference will be given to those applications that are relevant to the issues around cannabis consumption and other substances within Canada.
What content will I need for the submission?
You will need to have the following information in order to complete the submission:
- Title (max 40 words);
- A description of the webinar (abstract maximum of 300 words);
- How you will engage the audience (e.g., through the use of polls, chat functions, etc.);
- Level of content (beginner to advanced – what level of knowledge do participants need);
- Learning objectives ("By the end of this webinar participants will be able to…”);
- What is the source of your webinar (research, practice) and what level (local, national);
- Estimated length of the webinar; and,
- Presenter information.
What are the expectations with respect to the length of the webinars?
Proposed webinars may vary in length from 10 to 75 minutes. Note that shorter proposals may be combined with other presentations.
When will the webinars be held?
All webinars will take place at 12:00 PM Eastern Time (ET). These are the proposed webinar dates:
- Wednesday 14 February 2018
- Wednesday 21 March 2018
- Wednesday 18 April 2018
- Wednesday 16 May 2018
- Wednesday 13 June 2018
- Wednesday 19 September 2018
- Wednesday 17 October 2018
- Wednesday 14 November 2018
If accepted, we will work with you to determine a suitable date.
Webinar proposals are welcome in either English or French. There is no limit to the number of proposals an individual may submit.
What is the application deadline?
This is an open call and submissions will be reviewed on an ongoing basis.
When will applicants be notified of their application status?
All applicants will be contacted and notified of their submission status within five business days following submission.
